Football club hosts ‘Love4Luke’ fundraising evening
DISCO dancing will replace footballing and fancy dress the team strip at Burton Park Wanderers FC next week, when members, friends and visitors attend an event at the Burton Latimer club for a very special little boy.
A fundraising evening on Saturday, March 12 (from 7.30pm), will be helping Luke Lester – a local boy who has been poorly in hospital – and his family.
Three-year-old Luke was admitted to hospital just before Christmas and an infection resulted in amputation of half his right leg and the toes on his left foot.
Kirsty Ward is chairman of the fundraising committee at the Wanderers’ football club. She told Extra Local: “Luke’s mum and dad, Clare and Anthony, are strong supporters of Burton Park Wanderers FC and often help out at our fundraising events – so we wanted to give something back.
“We’ve organised the Love4Luke fundraiser to help him on his road to recovery – as, now that he’s home, he has a long road ahead of him and it’s been a massive shock to the family.
“While we’re not clear about the next step, the money we raise will help with Luke’s rehabilitation. Overall, we’re hoping to raise around £2,500 from the event.”
The evening will include a disco and fancy dress, plus a raffle to which some fabulous prizes have been donated – including hampers, tea-for-two vouchers at Beckworth Emporium and Rushton Hall, dinner-for-four at Kettering Park Hotel, signed football shirts, tickets for a Peterborough Town match and many more.
Kirsty added: “We’ve received a lot of generosity from people in the area – we’ve been able to print our raffle tickets at a discounted price, we’ve had the food donated and the DJ is doing the disco free of charge, which means the fundraiser hasn’t cost the club a great deal, so we can raise even more for Luke.”
