Thanks Jan! Grand Masters Hockey tournament for over-75s was a success
HAVING read all the nice things that were written about me and the tournament (Extra Local April 24), may I make a couple of comments.
While I am a life member of the Alliance International Hockey Club, I am not a founder member – just keen to play whenever I can.
The main reason the tournament was so successful is the input of Jan Randle and her family and friends in Kettering Hockey Club.
Not only did they provide a continuous supply of refreshments during the weekend, they were responsible for inviting all the participants to an excellent Saturday night meal and social evening at the clubhouse.
Not content with that, they were responsible for providing physiotherapists to work on ailing ancients and, above all, making everyone feel welcome.
Having met most of the players at the Regional Over 70 tournament, they were unanimous in their praise for ‘the team’ and are looking forward to next year’s event on April 2 and 3, when we hope that there will be teams from all five regions and, possibly, from Alliance, Scotland and Wales as well.
Pictured above – SMALL SQUALL: That’s the name of the Kettering team, pictured (thus dubbed because the other teams were East Winds, West Winds etc). The local team was mostly made up of Kettering veterans, although a couple of ringers were brought in to make up the numbers, even though it was a mens’ tournament!
Jan Randle is the lady on the left, and the taller lady on the right is Julia Telford, both of whom have represented England in their respective age groups in previous years. Jan has been on the hockey club committee in past years and has played for Kettering Hockey Club over a 50-year span, currently playing for the Ladies 3rd team..
Bill Greenwood isn’t on this team photo as he was playing for the Midlands team at this first-ever veterans tournament weekend staged in Wellingborough last month.
